Digitalisation and new technologies in large infrastructure projects
The EIC Workshop on 24 April 2026, held during the EIC Spring Conference in Málaga, attracted more than 100 delegates for a vivid discussion on ‘Building Tomorrow - Digitalisation, Artificial Intelligence and Technology in Infrastructure Construction’. The event was opened by the Mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, who welcomed EIC Delegates to Málaga, followed by an inspiring key-note speech from Hector García Tellado, CTO of Microsoft Europe.
International experts and major technology companies discussed in three panel sessions how data, artificial intelligence, and automation are reshaping the sector in light of the new European framework promoting innovation. The speakers stressed that digitalisation is now key to competing and improving efficiency and safety. Moreover, an updated regulatory framework that prioritises these innovations and assigns them clear economic weight in contracts is essential.
Experts agreed that the construction industry is moving toward a new stage that goes beyond digitalisation, evolving into dynamic, predictive, and increasingly autonomous physical and virtual ecosystems. This process requires not only technology but also cultural and organisational shift, as well as strategic partnerships between industrial and technology companies to drive joint innovation.
EIC President Gustavo Martínez concluded that digitalization, including tools such as BIM and digital twins, is no longer a choice but a basic requirement to remain competitive, to reduce risk and cost, and to deliver large infrastructure projects safely and efficiently. Artificial intelligence is now a central driver of transformation across the entire life cycle of assets. From design and planning to construction and operation, AI helps to anticipate risks, optimise resources, improve safety, and increase resilience.
